Structure and terminology¶
Term |
Meaning |
|---|---|
Device |
A saved computer, virtual machine or network device with a name and address. |
Check |
Monitoring that has been explicitly configured, such as Ping, HTTP, TCP, resources or an additional check. |
Reading |
An individual recorded value, such as CPU usage, response time or free memory. |
Check interval |
Time between regular checks, in seconds. |
Response timeout |
Time within which the respective query must respond. |
Failed attempts |
Consecutive failed queries before a fault is detected. |
Agent |
User account for the web interface. All agents have the same permissions. |
Data collector |
A separately operated program that runs assigned checks in a remote network and sends the results to the central server. |
Dependency |
Association of a device with an upstream Ping, TCP or HTTP check. It can suspend the device’s own checks. |
Activation |
Authorization tied to an installation for the number of monitored devices. |
The device status is calculated from the checks that have actually been configured. Simply creating a device does not start an automatic Ping check. A missing Ping response may be caused by a firewall; on its own, it does not prove that a device has failed.
