Field

Input and meaning

Mail server

DNS name or address of the SMTP server, without a URL path.

Encryption

STARTTLS, TLS or None – internal relay. STARTTLS starts unencrypted and switches to TLS before sign-in; TLS starts encrypted immediately.

Port

Appropriate SMTP port. When encryption is changed, the interface sets 587 for STARTTLS, 465 for TLS or 25 for an internal relay. A different server port can then be entered.

Sender address

A valid email address that the mail server accepts as a sender.

Recipient address

A single valid recipient address. Multiple addresses cannot be entered here as a list. For several people, you can use an existing mailing list address on the mail server.

Username

SMTP username if the server requires sign-in. Leave empty for an authorized internal relay without sign-in.

Mail server password

Password for SMTP sign-in. An empty field retains a previously saved password.

Remove saved password

Removes the saved password when saving. If a username is still entered, a password is required again to enable notifications.

SMTP sign-in is only permitted with STARTTLS or TLS. For None – internal relay, the username must remain empty. Sender and recipient must also be entered when using a relay.

Test the connection and save

  1. Enter the server details, sender and recipient.

  2. Add the required sign-in details.

  3. If the server uses an internal certificate authority, add its CA certificate as described below.

  4. Click Test mail server connection.

  5. After a successful test, click Save notification settings.

The test does not send a test email. It checks the connection, TLS configuration and sign-in where applicable. A successful check therefore does not yet confirm delivery to the recipient address. Whether the server accepts the sender and recipient and delivers the message can only be checked with an actual notification.

An email contains a subject with [Monitoring], the state change and the affected check. The message body includes the device, address, check, state, start of the problem and event time, among other details. The optional monitoring address is added as a link.
