Configuring a monitoring dependency¶
A dependency is useful when checking a device would not be meaningful without a working parent connection, for example a server behind a router. Select one parent check per device.
Configure a suitable Ping, TCP or HTTP check on the parent device and save it.
Open Configure on the dependent device.
Under Device → Depends on, select the saved check on the upstream device.
Select Save all.
Open Device connections → Dependencies to verify the relationship.
The dependency points from the parent device to the dependent device. If the parent check fails, the device’s own checks are suspended. A parent check that is paused or not activated, or a result that is not yet valid or is overdue, can also block the dependent checks. After recovery, these checks are performed again. The blocked status does not confirm an outage of the dependent device.
A check used as a dependency by other devices can be deleted only after those dependencies have been changed or removed. Circular dependencies and a device depending on itself are rejected. Select No dependency and save to remove a relationship.
Example: Router-A has the check “Router reachable”. Server-A selects this check under Depends on. If the router becomes unreachable, Server-A shows the suspended status with a reference to the parent check. As soon as that check provides a valid result again, the server checks restart.
